Wild Africa marked World Ranger Day 2025 on Thursday by celebrating the dedication and sacrifices of Africa’s nearly 60,000 rangers who work under dangerous conditions to protect wildlife and ecosystems.
The day, observed globally under the theme “Rangers, Powering Transformative Conservation,” pays tribute to rangers worldwide and commemorates those who have died or suffered while on duty.
Rangers are critical in the fight against growing conservation threats in Africa, including habitat loss, poaching, climate change, and urban expansion. Despite their importance, ranger numbers remain dangerously low.
Of the estimated 280,000 rangers globally, far fewer than the 1.5 million needed to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 are currently active, and many face severe risks.
Between 2006 and 2021, 2,351 rangers died in the line of duty, with over 42% of the deaths linked to wildlife crime. Beyond these dangers, rangers often endure isolation, long periods away from family, and stigma from their communities.
“Rangers are nature’s first line of defence,” said Linus Unah, West Africa Director for Wild Africa.
“Without their sacrifice and commitment, iconic species like lions, elephants, and gorillas could vanish forever.”
In Nigeria’s Omo Forest Reserve, ranger Odamo Yemi expressed pride in his work: “I love to protect nature and observe animal behaviour.
World Ranger Day is a day to recognise and appreciate our efforts.”
Former hunter Gbenga Ogunwole, now also a ranger at Omo, echoed this sentiment: “Protecting nature is not only for rangers—it’s for all of us.”
Wild Africa continues to spotlight ranger stories from across the continent, aiming to build public awareness and support for their essential role in conservation.
Unah concluded, “Let’s reaffirm our commitment to support rangers with the resources and recognition they need to continue protecting Africa’s natural heritage.”
