WAPAN Set to Partner with FG to meet International Standard in Conservation of Environment In Nigeria

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to meeting international standards through collaboration with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Government in waste picking in Nigeria.

According to the Association, the public perceives Waste Pickers as a threat, and this negative perception has led the government to hinder the activities of waste picking in Nigeria.

These concerns were revealed on Thursday in Abuja during the inaugural meetings of WAPAN.

In his remarks, the President of WAPAN, Comrade Salisu Ali Yarma, lamented that the public sees Waste Pickers as a nuisance to society.

He emphasized that the association is working to rebrand the image of Waste Pickers across the country.

“We are currently facing a situation in the country where the government and the people view waste pickers as a nuisance, leading to their arrest and mistreatment. However, waste pickers contribute more to society than people realize.”

“As part of our efforts to gain international recognition, we have initiated liaison and collaboration with the International Alliance for Waste Pickers, represented by Mrs. Amira Halabi, the African Coordinator.”

“The association will also provide uniforms for the Waste Pickers to enhance their dignity and improve public perception of them.”

Similarly, Comrade Alh Usman Bakawu, the National Financial Secretary of WAPAN, highlighted that the main aim of the meeting is to rebrand the organization. This will help restore dignity to the association and garner more support from the public.

“WAPAN will also consider restructuring its name, as many Nigerians currently refer to waste pickers as scavengers.”

The association further expressed its intention to affiliate with other organizations, such as the National Labour Congress (NLC), to address unemployment rates in Nigeria.

Unity among the members across the country was also emphasized, with the aim of bringing them under one umbrella for collective strength and impact.
