By Abdullahi Lukman

Bingham University in Karu, Nasarawa State, has joined global efforts to protect the environment by advocating for reduced plastic waste and sustainable practices, marking this year’s World Environment Day themed “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

As part of the celebrations, students and lecturers from the Department of Mass Communication planted trees and cleared plastic waste on campus to foster a greener environment.

The university emphasized its commitment to environmental preservation and pollution reduction.

During a one-day seminar organized by the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNA-Nigeria), Abuja branch, and the Hope Aglow Charity Foundation, Dr. Desmond Okocha, Dean of the Faculty of Communications and State Coordinator of UNA-Nigeria Abuja, stressed the urgency of valuing and protecting the environment through responsible plastic use and disposal.

Lecturer Dr. James Bwala highlighted tree planting as a crucial strategy for climate regulation, biodiversity, and community health, urging education and awareness to foster environmental stewardship.

Dr. Cynthia Obiorah, founder of Hope Aglow Charity Foundation, called on participants to promote sustainable habits and reduce plastic waste, emphasizing its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health while encouraging plastic waste recycling to create economic value.
