Varsity don advocates artificial insemination to boost rural farming

By Abdullahi Lukman

Professor Lukman Raji, a specialist in Theriogenology and Production at the University of Ilorin, has called for the integration of Artificial Insemination (AI) into agricultural subsidies and extension programs to improve livestock productivity among rural farmers.

Speaking on Friday during the university’s 287th Inaugural Lecture themed “Theriogenologist’s Account; Insight into Gender Effects in Veterinary Reproduction,” Raji emphasized the importance of offering subsidised AI services using proven extenders like honey-based and skim milk, alongside synchronised ovulation protocols.

He highlighted that subsidised AI could increase calving and kidding rates while reducing the spread of sexually transmitted animal diseases such as trichomoniasis and brucellosis.

“Theriogenology goes beyond delivering offspring; it involves the conscious management of reproductive health, fertility, and technological advances in both domestic and wild animals, impacting human well-being,” Raji explained.

He described the field as built on three main pillars: Veterinary Andrology, focusing on male reproductive health; Veterinary Gynecology, centered on female reproductive health; and Veterinary Obstetrics, covering medical and surgical care during breeding and neonatal periods.

Raji also stressed that theriogenology represents more than an academic discipline — it embodies hope, resilience, and continuity vital for food security, public health, and gender equity in Nigeria.

“Nigeria must harness theriogenology as a transformative tool, moving knowledge from research into practical policies and community programs,” he urged.
