Students of the Department of Development and Strategic Communication, University of Abuja, have marked the 2026 World Desertification Day with tree-planting exercise to promote environmental sustainability and reforestation.
The tree-planting exercise took place on Tuesday across the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies premises was carried out by students offering Environmental Communication (DCS 208) under the supervision of course to climate-related environmental challenges.
A statement from the Department of Development and Strategic Communication indicates that the exercise exposed the Students to practical aspect of environmental communication as they actively participated in soil digging, planting pits, seedlings, watering the trees and documenting the exercise through photographs and videos.
The department disclosed that the exercise was also witnessed by Head of the Department of Broadcasting and Film Studies Dr. Sarah Gambo, Head of the Department of Information, Journalism and Media Studies Dr. Yusuf Bolakale Suleiman, and author, Mrs. Funmilayo Braithwaite.
The department further reported that a tree was planted on behalf of the Head of the Department of Development and Strategic Communication, Dr. Aisha Abdulrauf, who was unable to attend the exercise due to other official engagements.
According to the department, the Environmental Communication class also planted a tree in its collective name as a symbol of its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable environmental practices.
