President Bola Tinubu has departed Lagos for Europe as part of his end-of-year schedule, ahead of his participation in the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.
The President is expected to proceed from Europe to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where he will attend the high-level sustainability summit scheduled for early January 2026.
His participation follows a formal invitation from the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit is a globally recognised platform that convenes leaders from government, business, finance and civil society to advance discussions on sustainable development.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the summit is a week-long event that focuses on collaborative solutions to global sustainability challenges.
The 2026 edition of the summit will be held under the theme “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go.”
The theme is designed to highlight the importance of connecting innovation, finance and people in driving inclusive and sustainable economic growth worldwide.
President Tinubu’s attendance is expected to position Nigeria within global conversations on climate action, energy transition, sustainable finance and development partnerships.
Officials say the summit will provide an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen international cooperation and showcase its commitment to sustainability and development goals.
The President is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders and stakeholders on the sidelines of the summit.
These engagements are anticipated to focus on investment, energy, climate resilience and broader economic cooperation.
President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.
The trip comes shortly after the President arrived in Lagos to spend the end-of-year holidays.
Before coming to Lagos, Tinubu had undertaken official visits to Borno and Bauchi states as part of his domestic engagements.
During those visits, the President assessed security situations, development projects and ongoing federal government interventions.
On his arrival in Lagos for the holidays, President Tinubu was received at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
He was welcomed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior government officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress.
The President’s departure for Europe marks the continuation of his international engagements since assuming office.
His administration has consistently emphasised the importance of international diplomacy, investment attraction and global partnerships.
Participation in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to address climate change, promote renewable energy and pursue sustainable economic reforms.
The summit is expected to attract thousands of participants, including heads of state, policymakers, investors, innovators and development experts.
Nigeria’s presence at the event is seen as an opportunity to project its reform agenda and engage with global stakeholders.
Observers note that sustainability summits such as this play an increasingly important role in shaping international development priorities.
The President’s trip also underscores the growing relevance of sustainability discussions in global politics and economics.
As Nigeria faces challenges related to energy transition, climate impacts and economic diversification, such platforms are viewed as strategically significant.
Government sources indicate that outcomes from the summit could support Nigeria’s long-term development planning and international collaborations.
President Tinubu’s return after the summit is expected to be followed by renewed focus on domestic governance and policy implementation.
The visit therefore combines diplomatic engagement, sustainability advocacy and Nigeria’s broader international outlook.
