Texas faces challenges as US ends renewable energy tax incentives

By Abdullahi Lukman

Texas, the US’ leader in renewable energy production, is facing new challenges as federal tax incentives for wind and solar projects end, potentially slowing growth in clean energy development.

The repeal, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed in July, removes crucial investment tax credits that had supported renewable projects across the country.

Energy experts warn this could hinder new wind and solar projects, though existing infrastructure is expected to remain unaffected.

Dr. Taylor Collins, an energy economics professor at the University of the Incarnate Word, explained that projects must begin construction by July 4, 2026, to qualify for remaining credits, so immediate impacts may be limited.

However, the long-term outlook shows potential declines in renewable investments and related job losses.

Robert Miggins, CEO of Big Sun Solar, emphasized Texas’s growing energy needs driven by population growth and expanding data centers.

He stressed the importance of maintaining a diverse energy mix including oil, gas, coal, nuclear, wind, and solar to meet demand.

CPS Energy CEO Rudy Garza confirmed that despite the loss of tax breaks, his utility will continue investing in solar and battery storage to meet community needs, though higher costs may result for consumers.

The rising electricity demand in the U.S., expected to grow 16 percent over five years, adds pressure to sustain energy production.

Miggins also expressed concern that restrictive policies could drive data center development overseas, risking economic and security interests tied to Texas’s renewable energy manufacturing sector.

While short-term boosts in construction may occur as companies rush to qualify for tax credits, Collins warned of longer-term economic impacts, including reduced investment, job losses, and slower GDP growth post-202.
