Solar energy has emerged as the most preferred renewable energy source for Africa’s future, according to a recent online poll conducted by NatureNews Africa across its social media platforms.
The poll, which ran simultaneously on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, sought public opinion on which renewable energy source Africa should invest in the most.
Results revealed that 43 percent of respondents voted for solar energy, highlighting the continent’s strong inclination toward harnessing its abundant sunlight to power sustainable growth.
Hydropower followed with 25 percent of the votes, reflecting continued confidence in Africa’s vast river systems as reliable energy sources.
Wind and nuclear energy tied for third place, each securing 16 percent, indicating growing but still moderate public interest in these alternatives.
The findings underscore Africa’s vast renewable potential and the increasing awareness among its citizens about the need to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.
Experts say the preference for solar energy aligns with Africa’s natural advantage of high solar irradiance, especially in regions such as the Sahel and the Sahara.
Solar technology is also becoming more affordable and adaptable for both urban and rural communities, making it a practical choice for improving electricity access across the continent.
NatureNews Africa, which focuses on climate, environment, and sustainability issues, described the poll as part of its ongoing effort to gauge public sentiment on energy and environmental priorities shaping Africa’s green transition.
The result reflects a growing public consensus that Africa’s bright future may quite literally be powered by the sun.
