The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate research and innovation in renewable energy alongside petroleum technologies.
The agreement, formalized in Abuja on Wednesday, aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and support Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner, more efficient energy systems.
Under the MoU, PTDF and NNPCL’s Research, Technology and Innovation arm (NNPC RTI Ltd) will collaborate on emerging renewable energy technologies, focusing on improving energy efficiency, sustainability, and security.
The partnership also emphasizes developing local talent through training programs and innovation skill-building to prepare a new generation of professionals equipped to drive Nigeria’s green energy agenda.
PTDF Executive, Secretary Ahmed Galadima Aminu, highlighted the MoU as a national commitment to integrating academia, industry, and government efforts in renewable energy research.
He stressed the need to translate scientific findings into practical solutions that contribute to economic diversification and environmental sustainability.
Sophia Mbakwe, NNPCL’s Executive Vice President for Business Services, described the collaboration as strategic for addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges.
She emphasized its role in boosting local content, technology adoption, and creating impactful renewable energy solutions that align with global energy transition goals.
Together, PTDF and NNPCL aim to strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in renewable energy innovation, supporting the country’s ambition to balance traditional oil and gas production with clean, sustainable alternatives for a resilient energy future.
