Oyo launches ‘Plastic Drive’ to tackle waste

The Oyo State Government has launched the “Oyo Plastic Drive” to raise awareness, promote plastic waste collection, and partner with recycling industries in a bid to combat plastic pollution.
The announcement was made during a World Environment Day symposium in Ibadan, jointly hosted by the Eleven Eleven Twelve Foundation (EETF) and the Embassy of Sweden.
Marking the 2025 World Environment Day themed “Beat Plastic Pollution,” Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Temilolu Ashamu, noted that Nigeria generates over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with less than 15% recycled.
“In Oyo State, this reality is visible in our cities and drainage systems,” he said, emphasizing the need for collective action.
The Oyo Plastic Drive, created in partnership with For Nature and the Future Eco-Green Initiative, will start in six pilot local government areas: Lagelu, Akinyele, Egbeda, Ido, Oluyole, and Ona-Ara.
The initiative includes roadshows, student education on sustainability, media outreach, and community engagement to promote responsible plastic use and disposal.
Ashamu said the initiative is part of a broader review of state waste management policies aimed at transitioning from a linear to a circular economy.
The programme also encourages stakeholder collaboration to ensure lasting impact.
Supporting the campaign, Hon. Olorunpoto Rahman, chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, revealed plans to introduce legislation promoting the use of biodegradable materials.
Professor Aina Adeogun of the University of Ibadan stressed the importance of involving all sectors of society and balancing sustainability with economic goals.
Meanwhile, EETF founder Adetunji Lam-Adesina highlighted the importance of community involvement, announcing plans to establish an Environmental Protection Network to unify civil society efforts in environmental advocacy across Oyo State.
