The Osun State Government has warned residents across the state to prepare for possible heavy rainfall, flash floods, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions expected during the peak of the rainy season.

The warning was contained in a statement signed by Professor Chinwe Obuaku, Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Osun State Government on Monday.

The government said recent weather forecasts and environmental assessments indicate that several communities may experience intense rainfall capable of causing flooding, erosion, destruction of property, traffic disruption, and possible loss of lives if precautionary measures are ignored.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and places with poor drainage systems were advised to remain highly cautious.

The government directed residents to immediately clear blocked drainage channels around homes, markets, offices, and business areas, while also warning against dumping refuse in waterways and drainage systems.

Citizens were further advised to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, stay away from flooded roads and fast-flowing water, and secure weak structures, rooftops, signboards, trees, and electric poles against strong winds.

Parents, school authorities, transport operators, traders, and community leaders were urged to prioritize safety and comply fully with environmental and emergency directives.

The government also called on residents to promptly report flooding incidents, erosion threats, fallen trees, and blocked drainage channels to the appropriate authorities.

It added that emergency response agencies across the state have been placed on alert to strengthen monitoring and response efforts, stressing that personal responsibility and preventive measures remain essential in reducing disasters.
