The Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council in Rivers State has provided marine equipment to the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen patrol, surveillance and rapid-response operations across the area’s waterways.
The Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications reported on Sunday that the equipment was presented at a ceremony in Opobo Town by the council chairman, Barr. James A. James.
According to the ministry, the equipment included two 85-horsepower outboard engines and automotive batteries with capacities of 100Ah, 200Ah and 300Ah.
James explained that the equipment was provided to the special Marine Police squad, code-named ASAWANA, to improve its ability to patrol and monitor waterways across the LGA.
The council chairman described Opobo/Nkoro as a waterway-dominated local government area where effective marine security is important to the safety and development of its communities.
James said the support would enable the Marine Police to respond more quickly to security challenges while strengthening surveillance across the waterways.
The chairman also described Opobo/Nkoro as a strategic border LGA and said stronger police presence was needed to address security concerns, including the reported influx of foreign migrants.
According to the Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications, James said the equipment demonstrated his administration’s commitment to collaboration between the local government and security agencies.
James commended the ASAWANA squad for its role in protecting communities and maintaining peace and security in the area.
He urged the Marine Police to remain proactive in securing the waterways, saying improved security would create a more conducive environment for investment, tourism and sustainable development.
