Ocean encroachment threatens Lagos – Calabar coastal highway

• FG deploys rapid response to save project

By Faridat Salifu

The Federal Ministry of Works has deployed geotextiles and rock layering to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway from ocean encroachment.

Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of roads and bridge projects in Lagos State.

Umahi said the ocean nearly broke into the carriageway at Kilometre 14.6, posing a major risk to the highway under construction.

He noted that the reinforcement work was unplanned and had already consumed part of the project’s contingency fund.

The minister warned that failure to address the issue could jeopardize the entire project.

He commended the contractor and supervising engineers for responding quickly to safeguard the highway from damage.
