Oba Adeyemi dies after 52 years as Alaafin of Oyo
The 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi died Friday night at the age of 83.
Oba Adeyemi, who was the permanent Chairman of Oyo State Traditional Council, ruled for 52 years as the longest reigning Alaafin in the history of the ancient Yoruba empire.
He died after a protracted illness at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
Oba Adeyemi is the third high ranking traditional ruler to have died in Oyo State, in less than six months.
The Alaafinsm’s death trails the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi.
Born on October 15, 1938 into the Alowolodu Royal House, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi was crowned on November 18, 1970 after the demise of Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I.
He was a keen sportsman and was famous for his boxing skills and vast knowledge of yoruba history.
Until a new Alaafin is installed, the Bashorun of Oyo and head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, will serve as the regent of the Oyo kingdom.
