Nurses Across the Borders seeks more partnership with Delta State on climate change

Yemi Olakitan

In order to ensure the mitigation of the effects of climate change in the South-South region of Nigeria, Nurses Across the Borders International, a non-profit organization with incorporated trustees in Nigeria and the United States of America, has sought additional collaboration with the Delta State Government in Nigeria.

This information was disclosed in a letter of appreciation written by the organisation and sent to the Delta State Government on November 21, 2021. As the state’s governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, actively participated in the recently concluded United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Conference of Parties, 27), which was held at the Sharm el Sheikh International Conference Centre in Egypt from November 6–18, 2022, it was also intended to recognise his contribution.

Pastor Peters Osawaru Omoragbon, President & CEO of Nurses Across the Borders, stated that the organisation would adore to open an office in Asaba, Delta State, that would act as a hub for the South-South zone of Nigeria in order to promote its engagements with the area due to its vulnerability to the climate change crisis.

As the detrimental effects of petroleum exploration in the Niger Delta region from gas flaring and oil spillages have negatively impacted our people’s health and despoiled our livelihood through traditional occupations of fishing and farming, it would also give us the chance to strengthen our current collaboration with the Centre for Sustainable Development-Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta in capacity building, research, and innovation.

According to him, the group demanded greater collaboration between the state and Nurses Across the Borders, arguing that this relationship needs to be strengthened with an MOU with the government on a more robust engagement that will draw a team of international experts to the state and support the good work your administration has been doing in terms of climate resilience, mitigation, and adaptation strategies.

The letter continued, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees and members of Nurses Across the Borders worldwide and our partners, I have the honour to express our profound gratitude and appreciation to His Excellency for identifying with Nurses Across the Borders International in the recently concluded UNFCCC COP 27, which took place in Egypt. We are without a doubt honoured to be associated with a visionary leader like illustrious Senator Ifeanyi Arthur OKOWA, Executive Governor of the State of Delta. Maritime Administration and Safety Agency of Nigeria were among the cooperating organisations at the convention. The Global Climate and Health Alliance, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment, the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Government Development Authority Epe, GreenPlinth Africa LTD, and the Whole Planet Initiative, among other cooperating organisations, were also acknowledged for their contributions.

With the cooperation of the government, he said, Nurses Across the Borders would collaborate to promote solar cooking as an alternative method of cooking, particularly in Nigeria’s rural areas, beginning in the Delta State and spreading throughout the entire nation.
