NOSDRA Vows Tough Action Against Oil Spillers, Pipeline Vandals

By Abdullahi Lukman

The new Board Chairman of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Edward Omo-Erewa, has sent fright down the spines of pipeline vandals, vowing to pursue them to their enclaves, irrespective of their societal status if they do not desist from the act.

Speaking during his maiden visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Omo-Erewa pledged to take a stronger stance against oil spills, stressing the imperative for a decisive shift toward more aggressive enforcement.

“We will go after those who spill oil irrespective of who they are,” Omo-Erewa declared, highlighting a history of inadequate disciplinary actions and promising to “change the narrative” by ensuring that polluters face serious consequences.

He specifically pointed to recent tanker spills as cases that would be pursued with greater determination.

In addition to addressing environmental issues, Omo-Erewa discussed internal agency matters, acknowledging staff concerns about working conditions.

He pledged to improve staff welfare and enhance NOSDRA’s overall effectiveness by fostering better collaboration between the board and management to boost productivity.

Director General of NOSDRA, Mr. Chukwuemeka Woke, welcomed Omo-Erewa’s commitment, expressing hope for positive changes within the agency.

Woke stressed the importance of a unified approach between the board and management to meet NOSDRA’s objectives, and assured full support for the Chairman’s vision, emphasizing that there would be no internal conflicts.

The agency’s renewed focus on strict enforcement marks a stronger commitment to tackling environmental degradation and holding those responsible for oil pollution accountable.
