NiMET Forecast: CAMIC Urges Urgent Action Against Water Scarcity in Northern Nigeria

By Obiabin Onukwugha

Environmental advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre (CAMIC), has called for urgent action to address water scarcity in Nigeria’s northern region.

This followed the Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Metreological Agency (NiMET), last week, which stated that there will be delayed rainfall in the northern part of the country this year.

The body expressed concern that the prolonged dry season would impact on millions of people, especially farmers and vulnerable communities, unless swift and sustainable measures are taken.

“Northern Nigeria has long struggled with seasonal water shortages, but climate change and erratic rainfall patterns have worsened the situation. NiMET’s forecast indicates that the region will receive less rainfall than usual, exacerbating drought conditions, reducing crop yields, and threatening access to clean drinking water.

“The prediction of reduced rainfall means we must act now to prevent severe water shortages that could impact food security, public health, and livelihoods.

“Proactive solutions are critical to ensuring communities can withstand these climate shocks,” CAMIC posited in a statement by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, on Thursday.

The body urged the government, private sector, and local communities to adopt strategic interventions to mitigate the impact of water scarcity. It also called for sustainable irrigation and other water-efficient farming techniques to reduce water wastage in agriculture.

CAMIC also called on the Nigerian government to accelerate investment in climate adaptation strategies, improve water infrastructure, and ensure equitable water distribution to affected communities.

It further stated that civil society organizations, the private sector, and international partners must also play a role in building climate resilience.

“As climate change continues to challenge our natural resources, we must embrace innovative, long-term solutions to secure water for all.

CAMIC remains committed to advocating for climate-smart policies and community-driven initiatives that ensure water security across Northern Nigeria,” the statement added. END
