Nigeria, Liberia Strengthen Ties to Combat Climate Change

By Abbas Nazil

Nigeria and Liberia are deepening their collaboration to address pressing climate challenges, with Liberia seeking Nigeria’s expertise in developing effective climate change solutions.

In a meeting held at Nigeria’s National Assembly in Abuja, a delegation of Liberian lawmakers and environmental experts engaged with their Nigerian counterparts to explore strategies for tackling environmental issues affecting both nations.

The Liberian delegation, led by Ernest Manseah Snr, met with Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Ecology and Climate Change to discuss ways to mitigate the growing climate crisis.

Manseah commended Nigeria for its leadership in climate change initiatives and expressed Liberia’s interest in learning from Nigeria’s policies and frameworks.

He highlighted Liberia’s consideration of establishing a Climate Fund and emphasized the need for more than just funding, stressing the importance of adopting effective climate action strategies.

Senator Seriake Dickson, chair of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing the need for African nations to unite in their efforts to combat climate change.

He pointed out that climate change poses a severe threat to the continent and requires collective action to develop sustainable solutions.

Dickson also noted that Nigeria’s Climate Change Act, the first of its kind in Africa, provides a strong legal foundation for addressing environmental challenges.

He underscored that this legislation positions Nigeria as a leader in climate change action and serves as a model for other African nations.

Several Nigerian lawmakers, including Senators Osita Ngwu, Adetokunbo Abiru, and Victor Umeh, echoed Dickson’s sentiments, advocating for stronger regional cooperation.

They emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange and policy strengthening to ensure that African nations can effectively respond to climate threats.

The senators expressed their willingness to support Liberia in developing its climate policies and recommended ongoing engagement between both nations to achieve mutual environmental goals.

Following the Senate meeting, the Liberian delegation proceeded to discussions with the House of Representatives Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, where they further explored areas of potential collaboration.

The talks centered on sharing Nigeria’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, as well as the possibility of joint projects aimed at environmental sustainability.

This high-level engagement marks a significant step toward a stronger regional approach to climate change.

The proposed partnership is expected to enhance Africa’s overall response to climate challenges, with Nigeria offering valuable insights and experience in environmental management.

As climate change continues to threaten livelihoods across the continent, such cooperation underscores the importance of unified action in safeguarding the future of African nations.
