Nigeria has officially adopted the Africa Water Vision 2063 during the 14th Ordinary Session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) held in Dakar, Senegal.
The meeting saw the launch of the Vision and its Policy Framework aimed at securing water, sanitation, and resilient ecosystems across Africa by 2063.
Represented by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Nigeria joined other African nations in committing to the domestication and implementation of the Vision at national and regional levels.
The AMCOW Council also agreed on enhanced financial sustainability through increased statutory contributions, development of strategic plans for 2026–2033, and preparations for a major international conference on financing the Vision in 2026.
In a statement released by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, Director of Information and PR, dated 29/9/2025, Prof. Utsev praised AMCOW’s leadership and reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation, emphasizing the Vision’s role in advancing climate resilience, public health, and economic growth.
The meeting tasked AMCOW in collaboration with the African Union Commission to present the Africa Water Vision 2063 for endorsement at the 39th African Union Assembly in February 2026, aligning Africa’s water priorities ahead of the United Nations 2026 Water Conference.
Nigeria’s active participation highlights its commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to integrated water resource management and climate-smart sanitation systems as key drivers for economic transformation.
