The Good Deeds Day coalition, Kwara Chapter, a group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), planted trees across several schools in Kwara State on June 19, 2025, as part of their environmental awareness campaign.
Beneficiary schools included Taoheed Secondary School, Forte Credence International School, St. Anthony Secondary School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, and ECWA Secondary School, Ganmo.
The coalition aims to plant 1,000 trees across schools in phases to support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 15, which focus on climate action and life on land.
Mrs. Funmilayo Osiegbu, coalition team lead, said the tree-planting initiative was designed to educate children on the effects of climate change and environmental degradation caused by pollution and plastic waste.
The project also included educational talks and demonstrations on tree planting’s benefits for humans and wildlife.
“The trees will improve school environments, provide fruits, offer shelter, and enhance aesthetics,” Osiegbu explained, emphasizing that the initiative helps combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide.
Dr. Lateef Olagunju, Secretary General of Nigeria’s National Commission for UNESCO, praised the coalition’s effort, highlighting tree planting as a symbol of kindness and community service that reduces carbon footprints and supports biodiversity.
Students and school officials, including ECWA Secondary School’s Head Boy Olamilekan Akinola and Principal Dr. Steve Timilade, welcomed the program, pledging to promote tree planting to protect the environment and foster sustainability in their communities.
