New NBMA DG vows to improve Nigeria’s biosafety, prioritise staff welfare

The new Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Bello Bawa Bwari, has pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessors to strengthen the agency’s mandate in safeguarding Nigeria’s environment and public health.
Speaking during his assumption of office on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Bwari commended the dedication of the NBMA staff and assured them of his commitment to promoting innovation, transparency, and staff welfare.
“I am here to build on what my predecessors established,” he said.
“The NBMA has a strong foundation, and together, we will strengthen our mandate, promote innovation, and ensure that Nigeria remains a leader in biosafety management across Africa.”
Bwari emphasized that staff motivation and welfare would be top priorities under his administration.
He described them as essential ingredients for effective service delivery and institutional growth.
The NBMA helmsman assured stakeholders and partners of continuous engagement to enhance transparency in biosafety regulation and increase public trust in the agency’s work.
He said the agency would continue to play a critical role in ensuring the safe application of modern biotechnology.
Bwari said the agency would remain focused on protecting human health and the environment from potential risks associated with genetically modified organisms.
He also commended the immediate past Director-General for her leadership and progress in advancing biosafety awareness and regulatory systems in Nigeria.
Bwari, a seasoned legal and administrative expert, stressed that teamwork, commitment, and innovation would guide his tenure.
He pledged to ensure a safer and more sustainable biosafety framework for the nation.
The new DG’s remarks were received with optimism by staff and management, who pledged their support to move the agency forward under his leadership.
