The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), in partnership with AMG Worldwide Limited on Friday trained and equipped 50 women in Kano State with renewable energy skills under the She-Powers Energy Initiative.
The beneficiaries received certificates and NASENI-branded toolkits after completing training in solar energy installation, maintenance and troubleshooting, enabling them to begin careers in the renewable energy sector.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Kano, NASENI Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Khalil Halilu, said the initiative was designed to empower women with practical skills, create entrepreneurs and expand access to clean energy solutions across communities.
He said the agency’s focus extends beyond technology to using innovation as a tool for improving livelihoods and creating economic opportunities.
According to Halilu, the growing demand for renewable energy in Nigeria presents significant opportunities for employment, business development and increased access to affordable and sustainable energy.
He explained that the She-Powers Energy Initiative forms part of NASENI’s nationwide women empowerment programme, noting that thousands of women have already benefited from similar interventions in agriculture, drone technology and other sectors.
Halilu said the provision of professional toolkits alongside certification would enable the trainees to immediately begin offering solar installation and maintenance services without the need to borrow equipment.
He also noted that empowering women with technical skills is particularly important in northern communities, where cultural practices sometimes limit male technicians’ access to certain parts of homes, creating opportunities for trained female professionals.
Representing Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, the Senior Special Adviser on Women Education, Yasmin Murtar, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution to women’s empowerment and human capital development.
She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting programmes that equip women with technical and entrepreneurial skills for economic self-reliance.
Also speaking, the Head Training Facilitator of AMG Worldwide Limited, Munir Ibrahim, urged the graduates to apply their newly acquired knowledge to establish businesses, provide renewable energy services and contribute to the development of their communities.
