The Lagos State government has arrested three individuals for allegedly disposing of waste illegally in the Ketu-Alapere area as part of ongoing efforts to curb environmental violations in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement posted on his X handle on Sunday.
According to the statement, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team carried out an overnight surveillance operation between Friday and Saturday in the Ketu-Alapere area.
Wahab said the operation led to the arrest of three individuals for unlawfully disposing of waste in unauthorised locations.
He added that the suspects were traced to their residences to investigate the motives behind their actions and deter further misconduct.
“During this operation, three individuals were apprehended for unlawfully disposing of waste in unauthorized locations,” the statement read.
According to the commissioner, investigations revealed that the affected properties lacked proper waste storage facilities and were not registered with designated Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators responsible for waste collection.
He stated that all documented properties had been forwarded to the LAWMA legal department for further legal action.
Wahab also said blackspots identified during the operation had been cleared to prevent further illegal dumping and environmental nuisance.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws and warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal.
