The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed six iron and steel manufacturing companies in the Odogunyan Industrial Layout, Ikorodu, over alleged environmental violations.
The enforcement operation was carried out on Monday on the directive of the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, as part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to tackle industrial pollution and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The affected companies are Germini Steel Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited and African Steel Nigeria Limited.
According to LASEPA, inspections at the facilities revealed several environmental infractions, including the emission of brown dust, black dust, mill scale, shredded dust, dead dust and other non-metallic particulate matter, which the agency said pose significant risks to air quality, public health and the environment.
Speaking on the enforcement, LASEPA General Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, said the agency would not relent in enforcing environmental laws across the state.
He said industries operating in Lagos must comply with environmental standards, noting that failure to do so would attract sanctions in line with existing regulations.
Ajayi added that the enforcement exercise reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting residents from the adverse effects of industrial pollution and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
He urged all industries and manufacturing firms to adopt environmentally responsible practices and ensure strict compliance with pollution control measures to avoid enforcement actions.
