A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State, Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to implement sustainable measures to address the state’s worsening waste management challenges.
In a statement issued on Monday Oyefusi expressed concern over the growing accumulation of refuse across communities, warning that overflowing bins, illegal dumpsites and blocked drainage channels pose serious threats to public health, environmental sustainability and flood control.
She attributed the situation to inadequate waste collection services, rapid population growth and insufficient waste disposal infrastructure. According to her, delays in waste evacuation have forced some residents to dump refuse in drains, canals and open spaces, worsening environmental pollution and increasing flood risks.
Oyefusi urged the government to invest in modern sanitary landfills, strengthen waste collection systems, expand recycling programmes and promote waste separation at source. She also advocated composting initiatives and waste-to-energy projects as sustainable alternatives to reduce landfill dependence.
The ADC stalwart further called for intensified public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and stronger collaboration between government agencies and private waste operators.
She stressed that decisive action is needed to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos, particularly as the rainy season progresses.
