The Lagos State Government has shut down the Oshodi Resettlement Market after traders allegedly attacked officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps during an enforcement operation on Tuesday.
Announcing the closure, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said traders obstructed officials from arresting hoodlums and street beggars operating in the area and allegedly aided the vandalisation of government vehicles.
According to Wahab, officers came under attack while carrying out the enforcement exercise, with personnel assaulted and operational vehicles damaged during the incident.
The closure comes amid renewed efforts by the state government to strengthen environmental enforcement and tackle activities contributing to poor sanitation and public nuisance across Lagos.
Only recently, the government inaugurated a special task force involving transport unions to curb indiscriminate waste dumping in public spaces.
Officials say enforcement of environmental laws will continue across the state, although no date has been announced for the reopening of the market.
