Lagos launches technology to modernise water pipeline monitoring

By Abdullahi Lukman

Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has introduced a new Crawler Bot technology to modernise the monitoring and maintenance of the state’s potable water supply.

The bot is designed to inspect underground transmission mains, a process previously considered slow, costly, and challenging.

Managing Director Mukhtaar Tijani said the robot, developed in partnership with Konsadem Associates and McAlpha Inc., captures high-definition video, measurements, and detects corrosion, cracks, blockages, and potential leaks inside pipelines.

It also maps pipe coordinates and diameters, providing engineers with critical data for smarter maintenance and reducing water losses.

The technology integrates with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydraulic modelling, supporting LWC’s digital transformation and long-term planning.

Tijani emphasized that the initiative reflects the corporation’s commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and safeguarding Lagos’ water infrastructure.

LWC described the launch as a milestone in its mission to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable water to residents and affirmed the government’s continued adoption of advanced technologies to strengthen water systems.
