The Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR) to strengthen emissions monitoring, improve climate accountability and support the state’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
On Monday, the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi, unveiled the registry during its official launch in Lagos, according to LASEPA.
Ajayi described the initiative as a landmark achievement reflecting the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to building a resilient, climate-smart and environmentally sustainable state.
According to Ajayi, Lagos is the first sub-national government in Nigeria to establish a comprehensive greenhouse gas registry.
He said climate change now affects public health, infrastructure, biodiversity, economic activities and the overall well-being of residents, making reliable emissions data increasingly important.
“The Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry has therefore been developed as a strategic platform to accurately measure, monitor, report, and verify greenhouse gas emissions across critical sectors of our economy,” Ajayi said.
He explained that the registry would strengthen evidence-based policymaking, improve transparency and accountability, support climate reporting obligations, facilitate carbon market opportunities and enhance investor confidence in Lagos’ climate initiatives.
Ajayi attributed the successful development of the registry to the technical collaboration between LASEPA and TPHG, thanking the organisation for its support in delivering the initiative.
