Lagos State has commissioned a $250 million leather processing and manufacturing hub in Mushin, naming the facility after Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said during the August 23, 2025, commissioning that the hub is expected to create 10,000 direct jobs and impact more than 150,000 artisans, with 70 percent of the opportunities reserved for women and youth.
The governor said the factory will enable Lagos to process hides and skins locally, produce leather goods such as shoes, bags, and belts on an industrial scale, and boost access to export markets.
He added that the project is designed to reduce raw material exports, improve incomes for artisans, and position Lagos as a regional center for leather goods manufacturing.
The hub is projected to generate over $250 million annually in exports once fully operational, according to the state government.
Sanwo-Olu said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize local industries and diversify Nigeria’s economy away from oil dependence.
Senator Tinubu described the project as an example of industrial growth that supports women and youth entrepreneurship.
