Lagos catfish farmers lose over ₦150m in flash floods, seek govt aid

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Lagos State Catfish and Allied Farmers Association (LASCAFAN) has reported losses exceeding ₦150 million due to recent flash floods that devastated fish farms across the state.

The association’s Vice President and incoming President, Mr. Olatoye Fajimi, revealed the scale of the damage in an interview on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Heavy overnight rains on Monday led to severe flooding in Ikorodu and other parts of Lagos, washing away fish stocks into gutters and canals. Over 50 fish farmers have been affected, with some ponds flooding for the first time in years.

The floods wiped out fish and destroyed costly inputs such as feed, plunging many farmers—already in debt—into financial distress.

Fajimi called for urgent government intervention, urging regular dredging of canals to prevent future flooding and proposing relocation support for vulnerable farmers.

He also appealed for assistance in providing feed and farming materials to help farmers recover and sustain their livelihoods.

Affected areas include Elepe, Mowe Kekere, Mowe Nla, Berger, Idiroko farm community, Maya, Lucky Fibre, Erikorodo, Igbe, Ibeshe, and Ofin, where farmers continue efforts to salvage what they can amid ongoing challenges.
