Lagos Builds Aquaculture Center of Excellence

• Center to create 1000 jobs, boost fish production

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Lagos State government has commenced construction of the Lagos Aquaculture Centre of Excellence (LACE), a major agricultural initiative expected to generate over 1,000 jobs and enhance food security across the state.

Located on a 35-hectare site in Igbonla, Eredo, in Epe Local Government Area, the LACE project is a public-private partnership between the Lagos State Government and Dula Agro-Services Limited.

It aims to revolutionise fish farming by increasing fish production and supporting smallholder farmers.

According to a statement released on Friday, the project will include a 50 million fish fingerlings hatchery, a 24,000-tonne feed mill, and a 20,000-tonne fish processing centre—the first of its kind in Nigeria.

The facility is also projected to supply 5,000 smallholder farms annually.

During a site inspection led by Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, officials assessed the progress of construction.

Olusanya described the project as a “one-stop centre” that will transform aquaculture in Lagos, create jobs, and lower fish prices by improving production and distribution systems.

“This initiative will not only improve food security but also provide a central hub for fish aggregation, processing, and marketing,” she said.

Chairman of the LACE Board, Mr. Rotimi Erogbogbo, called the project a “bold political statement of inclusivity and wealth creation,” stressing its potential to serve farmers, youths, and fishermen beyond Lagos.

Dula Agro-Services CEO, Mr. Ifedolapo Atinmo, expressed confidence in the timely completion of the centre, noting it would drive innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture sector.
