A Lagos-based charity school, Slum2School Green Academy, has been named among the Top 10 finalists worldwide for the 2026 World’s Best School Prize for Environmental Action, earning international recognition for its innovative blend of education and environmental sustainability.
The recognition, announced by T4 Education on Thursday, highlights the bamboo-built school in Saga, Epe, Lagos State, which was established to provide quality education for children in underserved riverine communities.
Before the school was built, many pupils travelled long distances by canoe to attend school.
Designed as a climate-friendly campus, the academy operates entirely on solar energy, harvests rainwater, and converts waste into biogas for clean cooking.
Students also participate in gardening, composting, recycling, and turning water hyacinths into useful products, while benefiting from digital learning, coding classes, and library resources.
According to T4 Education, the school has recorded significant academic improvements, with 96 per cent of students advancing by at least one literacy level, more than 70 per cent improving in numeracy, and over 90 per cent reading at or near their expected grade level.
Its programmes have also benefited more than 700 families through clean water, sanitation, and environmental awareness initiatives.
The school will now compete with other finalists for the global award, with winners set to be announced in November 2026.
It will also join other shortlisted schools at the World Schools Summit in London on January 16–17, 2027, to share its model with education leaders and policymakers from around the world.
