Kebbi Govt commits N2.6bn to buy fertilizer

By Faridat Salifu

Kebbi State Government has invested the sum of N2.6 billion on procurement of fertilizers meant for distribution among farmers in the state at no cost.

The farmers’ support initiative was revealed by the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Shehu Mu’azu, during a weekly press briefing held in Birnin Kebbi.

Highlighting the government’s steadfast commitment to agricultural advancement, Mu’azu underscored that the fertilizer distribution initiative complements the existing measures, including the allocation of grains valued at N5.6 billion as part of the state’s comprehensive palliative efforts.

In addition to the fertilizers, the government has taken proactive steps to equip farmers with essential tools and machinery essential for optimal productivity.

Mu’azu announced the distribution of 300 power tillers and 300 motorized pump sprayers to Farmers’ Cooperative Groups, empowering them to enhance agricultural operations effectively.

Furthermore, recognizing the significance of irrigation in bolstering crop yields, the government procured 6,000 units of solar-powered irrigation pumps to facilitate robust dry-season farming activities.

This strategic investment aligns with the state’s vision of harnessing sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate the impact of seasonal fluctuations on food production.

In a bid to mitigate potential agricultural challenges, particularly during the wet season, the state government has intensified efforts to combat the threat posed by Quelea birds, known for ravaging rice and millet farms.

Through proactive measures and collaborative interventions, the government aims to safeguard agricultural livelihoods and preserve crop yields from detrimental avian infestations.

Moreover, in a forward-thinking initiative, the government has approved the procurement of 10,000 units of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for the conversion of irrigation pumps, further bolstering the resilience of agricultural operations.

As Kebbi continues to prioritize agricultural development as a cornerstone of economic growth and food security, these strategic investments underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and ensuring the prosperity of farmers and communities across the state.
