Kano govt to revamp Audu Bako zoo

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Kano State Zoological Garden and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA) has announced plans to undertake a comprehensive, multi-phase revitalisation of the Audu Bako Zoological Garden to reposition it as a model wildlife park and boost tourism in the state.

The newly appointed Managing Director of the agency, Malam Musayyib Kawu, disclosed this in Kano, noting that the project has the backing of Governor Abba Yusuf and is aimed at reversing the steady decline in visitor numbers while stimulating economic growth.

According to Kawu, the revitalisation will focus on improving the zoo’s environment, upgrading facilities, and introducing enhanced amenities to attract more visitors.

He said the initiative is expected to generate increased revenue for the state and create employment opportunities in conservation and hospitality.

He added that the agency plans to introduce new animal species and improve staff welfare to ensure efficient service delivery.

A comprehensive assessment of the zoo’s challenges and operational needs will also be conducted and submitted to the state government to strengthen its standing as a major tourist destination.

The Audu Bako Zoological Garden, established in 1971/1972 and located on Zoo Road in Kano, spans about 46 hectares and is one of Nigeria’s leading wildlife parks.

It houses more than 70 animal species, including lions, giraffes and elephants, and serves as an important centre for education, conservation and recreation.

In recent years, however, the zoo has faced challenges such as inadequate funding and insufficient facilities for animal care, contributing to its reduced appeal to visitors.
