Kano Government Seals Warehouses Over Hazardous Chemical Storage in Residential Area

The Kano State Government has sealed two warehouses in Sabon Gari for violating environmental safety regulations by storing hazardous insecticides and fumigation chemicals that emitted strong, offensive odors.
The enforcement action, carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, took place along Airport Road by France Road, near No. 2 Court in the Gyadi Gyadi axis of the city.
According to the Director of Pollution Control at the ministry, Malam Ibrahim Nasir, the sealing followed multiple complaints from residents and commuters who were disturbed by the persistent foul smell coming from the warehouses.
After conducting a thorough inspection, officials from the ministry confirmed the presence of hazardous chemicals stored in the facilities.
As a result, the shop owners were served an abatement notice, instructing them to relocate and cease storing such substances in a residential neighborhood.
However, the failure to comply with the directive prompted the ministry to take decisive action by sealing the premises and initiating legal proceedings against the violators.
Malam Nasir emphasized that the storage of such materials in densely populated areas poses a significant threat to both public health and the environment. “We received a report about the offensive smell coming from the store.
Upon inspection, our officers confirmed the claim. The shop owner was served with an abatement notice, directing him to relocate and discontinue the storage of such materials, but he failed to comply. Consequently, we had no option but to seal the premises and take legal action,” he said.
Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental infractions, particularly those that jeopardize the health and safety of citizens.
He stated that the enforcement action is part of a broader effort to promote a clean and safe living environment in Kano State.
“Storing hazardous substances in residential areas poses a serious threat to health and the environment. We will not tolerate any activity that endangers the lives and well-being of our citizens,” he declared.
The ministry has called on the general public to remain vigilant and to report any environmental violations to the appropriate authorities.
It assured residents of its continued commitment to environmental protection, pollution control, and the promotion of a green and healthy urban landscape.
The recent action in Sabon Gari highlights the government’s resolve to act swiftly in addressing environmental hazards and protecting communities from preventable risks.
