Kaduna State Government distributed 100 clean cookstoves to women and persons with disabilities as part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day celebration aimed at promoting clean energy adoption and environmental protection.
The intervention was carried out by the Kaduna State Government through its Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to reduce dependence on traditional cooking methods that contribute to deforestation and indoor air pollution.
Officials said the initiative is designed to support the transition toward cleaner and more efficient energy sources while improving public health outcomes, especially in vulnerable households.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs. Linda Yakubu, explained that climate change is already evident through rising temperatures, flooding, land degradation and biodiversity loss across the country.
She noted that the distribution of clean cookstoves reflects the state’s commitment to nature-based and practical solutions that reduce pressure on forests and curb environmental degradation.
Yakubu added that environmental protection requires collective action from government, communities, development partners, civil society and the private sector to achieve long-term sustainability.
She emphasized that policies and environmental commitments must be translated into measurable actions that directly improve the lives of citizens while protecting natural ecosystems.
According to her, World Environment Day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to adopt sustainable practices that safeguard natural resources for present and future generations.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba, also highlighted that Kaduna State is making steady progress in expanding renewable energy infrastructure across key sectors.
He disclosed that all 255 Primary Healthcare Centres in the state have been equipped with solar power systems to ensure stable electricity supply for healthcare delivery services.
Buba further stated that all 23 local government areas have benefited from solar-powered streetlight installations aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence and improving security and public infrastructure.
He added that the state government is actively engaging partners on waste-to-wealth initiatives that convert waste into electricity, organic fertiliser and other useful products for economic and environmental benefits.
According to him, these renewable energy and environmental programmes are expected to create jobs, reduce pollution and support sustainable agricultural practices across Kaduna State.
He reaffirmed that the administration remains committed to expanding renewable energy access and strengthening climate action strategies in line with global environmental sustainability goals.
