Indonesia’s poultry production climbs amid low demand, price pressures

By Faridat Salifu

Indonesia’s poultry sector is expanding even as farmers struggle with weak consumer demand and falling prices, according to a USDA FAS report.

Broiler production is forecast to grow by 2.7 percent annually through 2029, with broiler and layer populations expected to reach 3.4 billion and 450 million head respectively in 2025, up from 3.28 billion and 341 million in 2024.

Imports of grandparent stock indicate a 6.1 percent increase in poultry production for 2025.

Despite the growth, live bird prices between April and May 2025 averaged Rp 15,000–17,000 per kilogram, below the production cost of Rp 18,000 per kilogram.

Many farmers delayed sales, resulting in heavier birds entering the market and higher feed consumption.

Poultry feed output for 2024/25 is estimated at 21.4 million metric tons, projected to rise 3 percent to 23.3 million metric tons in 2025/26.

Poultry accounts for 90 percent of domestic feed use, with aquaculture consuming 6 percent and cattle and swine 4 percent.

Per capita poultry consumption is expected to increase to 13.2 kilograms in 2024, compared to 12.6 kilograms in 2023.
