Improving agriculture key to Nigeria’s future – Japanese ambassador

By Awyetu Asabe Hope

The Japanese ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, has said that modernising agriculture and improving productivity are critical to Nigeria’s sustainable economic development.

Speaking at the 40th anniversary of the Sasakawa Africa Association, Hideo noted that Nigeria has vast agricultural potential, with fertile land covering about 76.6% of its territory and agriculture contributing roughly 25% to GDP while employing 34% of the workforce.

He stressed that unlocking this potential requires increased mechanisation, reduced post-harvest losses, and stronger market linkages.

“For 40 years, the Sasakawa Africa Association has supported efforts to boost Nigeria’s agricultural capacity,” he said.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, added that new initiatives are underway, including a nationwide “Readiness Assessment and Coalition of the Willing,” expected to launch in May 2026 with participation from all 36 states.

Country Director of the association, Godwin Atser, highlighted ongoing challenges, noting that Nigeria still spends about $10 billion annually on food imports due to production gaps.

He emphasised the need to deliver appropriate technologies to farmers through stronger extension services, while addressing issues such as climate variability, population growth, and economic pressures.
