Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called for united efforts to tackle plastic pollution across the state and Nigeria as part of this year’s World Environment Day celebration themed “Ending Plastic Pollution.”
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Chinyere Ekomaru, Uzodimma emphasized the shared responsibility to protect the environment and challenged scientists to develop new technologies to reduce plastic waste.
Sylvie Marie, Executive Director of the Ike Odoeme Foundation, announced the launch of a Recycling Education and Training Centre aimed at equipping youths with waste management skills and empowering them to create sustainable solutions.
The foundation also started a tree-planting campaign targeting erosion-prone communities along the Otammiri River, using indigenous trees like African oil bean, breadfruit, African pear, and avocado to restore the environment.
Marie highlighted the foundation’s initiative to introduce recycling bins in schools and communities to promote source-level waste collection, describing this as a crucial first step.
Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mr. Ejikeme Emenike, praised the foundation’s work and pledged government support, underscoring the importance of public-private partnerships for a cleaner environment.
Environmental experts Prof. Maurice Obasi and Dr. Emeka Obi called for policy reforms, public awareness, and stricter enforcement of sanitation laws to address the plastic pollution crisis and its health risks.
The event also featured the unveiling of sample recycling bins and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony led by the governor and dignitaries.
