NatureNews Africa recognises Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), as its Eco-personality of the Week for his sustained contributions to environmental advocacy, climate action, renewable energy promotion, and the pursuit of environmental justice, particularly in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.
Dr Fyneface has over a decade of experience working in the civil society and development sector, where he has become a prominent voice advocating for solutions to environmental degradation, oil pollution, climate change, and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. Through YEAC-Nigeria, he has championed community-driven approaches aimed at protecting ecosystems while improving livelihoods for vulnerable communities.
One of his major environmental interventions has been his advocacy for sustainable solutions to the challenges associated with artisanal crude oil refining, oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and pollution in the Niger Delta. He proposed the Presidential Artisanal Crude Oil Refining Development Initiative (PACORDI), an initiative designed to modernise artisanal refining practices, reduce environmental hazards, and create safer livelihood opportunities for affected communities. 
Beyond advocacy, Dr Fyneface has promoted renewable energy as an alternative pathway for sustainable development in oil-producing communities. Through YEAC Community Energy and Development (YEAC-CEAD), he has supported clean energy initiatives, including solar-powered mini-grid projects aimed at providing electricity access, reducing energy poverty, and discouraging environmentally harmful activities linked to unemployment and lack of opportunities.
The solar mini-grid project implemented in Umuolu community, Delta State, has provided clean energy access to households and businesses, demonstrating the role of community-based renewable energy solutions in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition and improving the quality of life of rural residents.
Dr Fyneface has also contributed to environmental monitoring and accountability through initiatives aimed at improving responses to oil pollution. YEAC-Nigeria developed the Community Pollution Monitoring and Environmental Protection (CoMaPeo) platform to support the monitoring, documentation, and reporting of oil spills and environmental damage in the Niger Delta.
His advocacy extends to the restoration of degraded ecosystems, including calls for accelerated implementation of environmental clean-up programmes in polluted communities and stronger protection of coastal and marine environments. He has consistently pushed for greater collaboration among government agencies, oil companies, communities, and environmental stakeholders to address pollution and restore affected ecosystems.
Through environmental advocacy, renewable energy innovation, youth empowerment, and community engagement, Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface continues to demonstrate that environmental protection must go beyond conservation efforts to include social development, economic opportunities, and justice for communities affected by environmental degradation.
His work reflects the growing importance of grassroots leadership in building a sustainable, climate-resilient, and environmentally responsible Nigeria.
