Forest conservation: Katsina to recruit forest guards, establish eco courts

By Grace Ademulegun

Governor Umar Dikko Radda of Katsina state has ordered the immediate hiring of 70 forest guards to check illegal activities in forests across the state.

Speaking in Katsina recently, the governor also disclosed plans to establish eco courts specifically designed to handle infractions related to forest protection.

The order is in response to a damning report on the illegal allocation of forest reserves and other activities in the state from 2017 to 2023.

These new hires, who will be hired on a Grade Level 01 basis, will be strategically stationed in forests across the local government areas in affected zones under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Their mission is to conduct routine surveillance in order to prevent unauthorised tree felling and illegal encroachment.

The specialized eco-courts, Gov.Radda said, will guarantee prompt prosecution of crimes such as encroachment and illicit logging.

The Governor declared, “This project demonstrates our administration’s steadfast dedication to conserving Katsina’s natural heritage.”
