Two classroom blocks at Ezi-Awka Community Secondary School in Awka, Anambra State, have collapsed following severe flooding and erosion caused by persistent rainfall.
Although no casualties were recorded as the buildings caved in after school hours, four additional classroom blocks and the staff room are reportedly at risk of collapse.
The incident has disrupted academic activities, with some students withdrawing from the school over safety concerns.
During an assessment visit on Thursday, school authorities appealed to the Anambra State Government for urgent intervention, warning that worsening erosion threatens lives and property.
The school’s principal, Mrs. Eucharia Ogbunyi, and other stakeholders attributed the problem to poor drainage infrastructure and continuous rainfall in the area.
A construction engineer accompanying the assessment team proposed a comprehensive erosion-control project to channel floodwater away from the school, while officials of the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency pledged to submit their findings to facilitate government action.
The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, said plans were underway to construct a new classroom block and address the erosion challenge affecting the school.
