Flood Threat: FCT Community Sends SOS to Government

By Abdullahi Lukman

Residents of Kagini, a thriving community in the Federal Capital Territory, have raised concerns over persistent drainage problems that continue to threaten lives and property as the rainy season approaches.

In separate interviews, community members lamented the state of infrastructure in the area, warning that without urgent government intervention, the water log experienced in previous years may worsen.

“I’m quite concerned,” said Salmat Idegu, a resident of the area. “Even with moderate rain, water quickly gathers around the house.

“I’ve sealed low-level openings and moved valuables to higher places. I even keep sandbags ready to protect the entrance.”

Saifullah Adam, another resident, acknowledged efforts by community groups to clean up some drains but insisted they fall short of what is required.

“The clean-ups help a bit, but they aren’t enough. Water still collects on the roads and causes major inconvenience. There’s no long-term plan in place from the authorities,” he said.

For Sulaiman Dan Lado, who resides near the Ghana Church in Kagini, the situation is even more severe due to the terrain.

“The road here is sloped and there’s no drainage at all. Even during the dry season, water collects and makes the place soggy,” he said, lamenting, “Now that the rains are coming, it’s going to drench us.”

He called on the government to intervene urgently before things get out of hand.

The residents are appealing to the Federal Capital Territory Administration and relevant agencies to prioritize the area in ongoing urban planning and flood prevention measures.

They emphasize the need for not just drainage construction but regular maintenance and community engagement to guarantee lasting solutions.
