Heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning triggered flash floods across parts of Lagos, submerging roads and disrupting traffic in areas including Victoria Island, Ogba, Lekki, and Ikorodu.
Residents in severely affected areas—such as Kofo Abayomi Street, Ologolo, and the Maya axis—navigated knee-deep floodwaters, with many stranded and unable to reach their destinations.
Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, called on residents to adopt responsible environmental practices, including proper waste disposal and avoiding construction in flood-prone zones.
“While we cannot control the weather, we can work together to mitigate its impact,” Wahab said.
The flooding disrupted daily routines across the city. A civil servant, Kayode Gabriel, described his ordeal in Victoria Island, where floodwaters made commuting difficult despite his early start.
The state government has repeatedly warned of Lagos’s high flood risk due to its flat terrain, poor drainage, and rapid urban development.
Emergency agencies are currently monitoring affected areas to assess the situation.
