Fire destroys buildings, displaces residents in Rivers

As the yuletide season comes to an end, fire accidents have occurred in some areas of Port Harcourt, capital city of Rivers State, destroying properties worth of millions as well as displacing residents.

On Tuesday, about 30 buildings were destroyed along Akpajo, Old refinery road, in Eleme local government area of the state.

NatureNews.Africa correspondent gathered from residents that the fire accident displaced many occupants of the buildings.

Speaking to a motorist, Ali Musa, who witnessed the incident, he said that the fire accident started on Monday night and nobody around the environment could trace which building the fire started from.

He alleged that faulty electrical appliances could be the reason for the fire outbreak.

Asked about the intervention of the Fire Service personnel, Musa said “I didn’t stay longer to observe everything but the fire was quenched this morning (the following day).”

In another development, another fire outbreak occurred beside St. Catherine Hospital, off Slaughter Road, Port Harcourt on 2nd January, destroying the property.

Also, four days ago, over 200 persons were displaced, with goods and property worth millions of naira destroyed after a fire outbreak in Elekahia, Port Harcourt.

NatureNews.Africa gathered that the sad event which occurred on 30 December, started at about 8:30 am and was caused by a kerosene explosion.

An official of the Federal Fire Service, John Nnemeka, speaking to newsmen on this development, said that they arrived early but were unable to access the scene because of the nature of the houses.

Also speaking to a lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental management, University of Port Harcourt, who claimed anonymity, he urged residents to be careful especially in this harmattan season.

He warned that fire incidents are most prominent during harmattan seasons, adding that harmattan season, which is characterised by dry and dusty wind, could agitate fire from electrical appliances, candles and cooking stoves.
