FG redesigns schools curriculum to equip youth for modern farming
By Abbas Nazil
The Federal Government has announced a major initiative to redesign Nigeria’s agricultural curriculum to better equip the younger generation with modern skills, innovative techniques, and technology-driven knowledge for sustainable farming.
This initiative, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in partnership with the Ministry of Education, is intended to empower young farmers and promote long-term national food security.
The Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr. Aliyu S. Abdullahi, made the announcement during the second day of an interactive session organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation.
He stated that the redesigned curriculum is part of a broader strategy under the Renewed Hope Agenda to align the education and agricultural sectors for better synergy and outcomes.
According to the minister, the goal is to create a dynamic, youth-friendly agricultural education framework that reflects global best practices and supports Nigeria’s growing food needs.
He emphasized that agriculture must be approached as a business, and that education must be tailored to prepare young Nigerians to see farming as a profitable and respectable profession.
Dr. Abdullahi stressed that the initiative also demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to inter-sectoral collaboration.
He explained that the success of this strategy will depend on coordinated efforts between the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Water Resources, Livestock Development, and the Marine and Blue Economy.
He noted that such synergy is crucial for delivering on the promises of the Renewed Hope Agenda and improving productivity across agricultural value chains.
Highlighting the livestock sector, the minister announced that the newly created Ministry of Livestock Development is already taking steps to establish breeding centers across all six geopolitical zones.
These centers are expected to enhance livestock productivity, encourage scientific breeding techniques, and promote sustainable practices within the sector.
The curriculum redesign, he noted, will integrate technical training, modern tools, and agribusiness education, thereby producing a new class of farmers equipped to compete in a global economy.
This move is also expected to reduce youth unemployment and increase agricultural efficiency nationwide.
Dr. Abdullahi reiterated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is intentionally investing in youth development through agriculture, believing it to be one of the strongest vehicles for economic transformation.
He called on education providers, agricultural stakeholders, and private sector players to support the initiative and ensure that its implementation leads to real, measurable impact.
The interactive session, which continues this week, is part of a broader consultation effort to harmonize government action with stakeholder input.
The initiative reflects a strategic shift from traditional farming to a more modern, innovative, and business-oriented approach to agriculture in Nigeria.
