FG moves to cut food prices with subsidized fertilizer scheme

The Federal Government is rolling out fresh measures to tackle Nigeria’s persistent food inflation, with a new plan to supply fertilizer to farmers at subsidized rates ahead of the 2026 planting season.
Disclosing this in Talata-Mafara, Zamfara State, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar, who represents Zamfara West Senatorial District, said the initiative forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategy to boost domestic food production and ease pressure on household incomes.
Yari said the president had assured that farmers would receive fertilizer in adequate quantity and at reduced prices, to help them increase yields and stabilize food supply across the country.
“The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will provide fertilizer at the lowest possible price to make sure farmers cultivate adequately during the next rainy season,” Yari said after a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) state executives at his residence.
He noted that the plan is central to Nigeria’s food security agenda, adding that a stronger fertilizer distribution system will not only empower farmers but also help lower the cost of staple foods in local markets.
“We will make sure farmers get fertilizer at affordable prices. This will encourage production, reduce dependency on imports, and bring food prices down,” he added.
According to the lawmaker, the policy is one of several economic measures aimed at restoring public confidence in the administration’s capacity to manage inflation and stabilize essential commodities.
Yari recalled that food prices had surged drastically in 2023, with a 50kg bag of rice rising from N40,000 to over N70,000, but noted that recent market data shows gradual improvement.
“Prices are easing gradually. A 50kg bag of rice now sells for about N55,000 or less. A 100kg bag that was N77,000 is now around N55,000. Millet, which sold for N70,000, is now N30,000, and corn is also N30,000,” he said.
He described the government’s ongoing agricultural interventions as a commitment to citizens’ welfare, saying that President Tinubu remains focused on achieving food security, affordability, and farmers’ prosperity.
“We want to convince Nigerians that we are truly concerned about their well-being, and by God’s grace, we will do more,” Yari assured, remarking, “Our goal is a country where farmers are happy, buyers are satisfied, and agriculture once again drives national progress.”
