Federal Government has intensified commitment to safeguarding the nation’s coastlines with the development of a comprehensive Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Policy.
This commitment was highlighted on June 25, 2025, at a National Stakeholders Consultative Workshop in Abuja by Mr. Mahmud Kambari, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, represented by Mr. Kunle Awojemila.
The policy aims to promote the sustainable use and protection of Nigeria’s coastal and marine resources.
Kambari emphasized the ecological and economic importance of the country’s coastal regions, which support livelihoods, commerce, and biodiversity.
However, these areas face increasing threats from climate change, rising sea levels, environmental degradation, poor land use, and frequent natural disasters.
He urged policymakers, researchers, private sector actors, and planners to use the workshop as a platform for collective action focused on evidence-based, inclusive planning that prioritizes vulnerable coastal communities.
Mr. Usman Bokani, Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management, represented by Mr. Abdullahi Atta, stressed that the ICZM policy marks a significant shift towards a structured, inclusive approach to managing Nigeria’s marine and coastal ecosystems.
Bokani warned that erosion, flooding, pollution, and climate change are damaging infrastructure, ecosystems, and public health in coastal zones.
He highlighted the policy’s importance for long-term sustainability, economic resilience, and improved quality of life in coastal communities.
He said with collaborative efforts and informed decisions, Nigeria can build a more resilient and productive coastal management system.
