FG Commences ₦59.46b Greater Dutse Water Supply Project

The federal government has commenced the construction of the Greater Dutse, Jigawa State capital, Water Supply Scheme, aimed to address critical water scarcity affecting over 1.5 million residents of the city and its environs.

The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place in Sintilmawa, Jigawa State, marks a transformative step towards resolving the daily water supply deficit of 10 million liters in the area.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, described the project as a historic milestone with far-reaching impacts on the quality of life and economic growth.

The Federal Executive Council approved the project , with a budget allocation of ₦59.46 billion and a completion timeline of 24 months.

Key components of the project include the construction of 35 industrial boreholes equipped with solar-powered pumps, the installation of a high-capacity water treatment plant capable of processing 1,000 cubic meters of water per hour, and the development of reinforced concrete storage tanks and Braithwaite tanks at strategic locations.

The project encompasses the laying of 56.6 kilometers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines for water transmission, the installation of solar energy systems, transformers, and generators, and the establishment of administrative and staff facilities at various project sites.

The minister highlighted the extensive planning that preceded the project, including a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and detailed designs.

He emphasized its multifaceted benefits, such as job creation, economic stimulation, and improved access to safe and clean drinking water.

A dedicated Project Implementation Unit, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and Jigawa State Government, has been established to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State commended the Federal Government for its commitment to alleviating the long-standing water scarcity in Dutse and neighboring areas.

He acknowledged the project as a fulfillment of President Tinubu’s pledge to prioritize essential infrastructure and the basic needs of Nigerians.

The event also drew accolades from other dignitaries, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Sada Soli, who emphasized the importance of the project in addressing water supply challenges nationwide.

The Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hameem Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi, expressed his appreciation for the Federal Government’s intervention, noting its potential to drive development and improve living conditions in the state.
