Ekiti warns resident against dumping refuse in drains

The Ekiti State Government has appealed to residents to stop dumping of refuse in drains, saying that it disturbs the free flow of rainwater.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Transport, Mr Sunday Komolafe, made this appeal during an interactive session with newsmen on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti.

Komolafe reiterated that the practice was capable of causing heavy flooding on roads, especially when the rainy season fully sets in.

He described the act as a great sabotage to the good and lofty efforts of the government toward providing a motorable and flood-free environment for the people.

“It is a very bad habit to dump materials, such as sand, stones, and refuse by the gutters.

“This can sabotage the good intention of the government toward checking flooding on the road, which impedes free vehicular movement.”

Komolafe said that Gov. Abiodun Oyebanji’s administration was committed to the wellbeing of its citizenry.

He warned perpetrators of the uncharitable act to desist from it or be prepared to face the full wrath of the law.

“I want to sound a note of warning against this act. Government will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute whoever was caught in such an act,” he said.

The permanent secretary further urged the people to “help the government to help them.

“People should not jettison the warnings issued by experts in the field of meteorology and weather forecast concerning heavy rains and flooding this year,” he stated.
